Hangmates is a word game made by SynergyPro Ltd. You don't need an account. We don't ask for your email, phone number, contacts or location, and we don't sell or share anything about you.
On your phone
The app keeps a random player ID it makes the first time it runs, a random key that goes with it, the name you choose, any players you've blocked, your sound settings, the last room you were in, and the answers waiting for your next solo game. Deleting the app deletes all of it.
On our servers
When you play with others, your player ID and name go to our game server so the room can seat you and show your name to the other players. A room's state is kept only while the room is open. If a room is public, its players' names are listed on the Open rooms screen until the game starts or the room closes.
When a match finishes, we keep its results — the scores, the answers each player solved, and the names shown in that match — so you can see your stats and your record against the people you play with. If you play The Daily Hang, our daily word, your result and the name you played under are kept and shown on that day's leaderboard, which anyone playing can see.
The server also keeps your player ID with the name you chose, so your name can be shown on leaderboards, and so a name other players report can be hidden. If you report a name, we keep who reported whom and the name that was reported. If enough players report the same name, it is shown as a stand-in name until you change it.
Each phone's key is kept only in a scrambled form that can check the key but not recreate it. Your list of blocked players is kept with your player too, so it follows you to another phone or tablet.
Linking Apple or Google is optional. If you choose to, we keep the account identifier Apple or Google gives us for this app — not your email, and not a password — so that signing in on another phone or tablet finds your player.
If you start The Daily Hang and don't finish, the moves you've made are kept until you finish it, so you can carry on from any phone or tablet you play on.
So that you don't get the same answer twice, the server remembers which answers each player ID has been shown, in solo games as well as with other players. That list is tied to the random ID, not to you. It also notes when each player ID was first and last seen, which is how we count how many people are playing. Solo also keeps a small set of answers on your phone in advance, so the game still works with no signal.
If you make a custom category, what you type is sent to Anthropic's Claude, which names the category and writes its answers. We keep the name and a short description Claude writes, so the next person who asks for the same thing gets it; we don't keep what you typed, or who asked.
Our servers run on Cloudflare, which keeps short-lived technical logs of requests, such as IP address and time, to operate and secure the service.
Crash reports
When the app or our server hits an error, a report goes to Sentry, the service we use to find and fix bugs. It holds what went wrong in the code, the screen you were on, the room's theme, and your phone's model and system version, along with a random ID for the install. It does not include your name, your player ID, your IP address or where you are — Sentry is set to discard the location it would otherwise work out from the connection. The one exception is a reported name: we are told about it through Sentry, with the name and where it was reported, so a person can look at it.
Not in the app
No advertising, no analytics and no tracking across other apps or websites. If that ever changes, this page changes first, and the app asks before anything that needs your permission.
Children
Hangmates is not directed at children under 13 and collects no personal information from anyone beyond the chosen name above.
